BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Vitiligo is a chronic aquired hypomelanotic autoimune disorder affecting from 0.5 to 2% of the general population. Psoriasis is one of the most common T-cell mediated autoimune disease in humans, with prevalence ranging between 1 and 3% in the population worldwide. There have been several reports of the concurrence of these two diseases in the literature. I report three cases of the coexistence of vitiligo and psoriasis (two male and a female). METHODS: After careful anamnesis, a clinical exam was performed for each patient and screening for autoimmune diseases was recommended. RESULTS: The onset of psoriasis occured before that of vitiligo in two patients (male and female) and after vitiligo in one case (male). Two patients had a positive family history: 1. one male’s parents with vitiligo (mother) and psoriasis (father) 2. one female’s relatives (sister, maternal aunt and niece) with psoriasis. On clinical examination the lesions of psoriasis and vitiligo were partly coincidental in the male patients, while the woman had separate distribution. The patients were screened for autoimmune diseases and found negative. The family history for autoimmunity was also negative. CONCLUSION: The concurrence of vitiligo and psoriasis in the same patients could indicate a common pathogenesis. Both diseases have a genetical component suggested in our cases by the positive family history. However the relationship of vitiligo and psoriasis needs to be further investigated.
