Clinical and Epidemiological study of Vitilio

OBJECTIVE: Study was conducted to analize clinical and epidemiological profile of vitiligo in Sri Lanka. METHODS: A descriptive study carried out over two years. 255 patients were intervieved and examined to find out epidemiological profile, clinical features, beliefs and impact of the disease. RESULTS: There were 140 (54.9%) females and 115(45.1%) males. Mean age at onset was 18.8 years and 62.3% got vitiligo before 30 years. 54 (21.17%) had segmental vitiligo and 201 (71.83%) had non segmental vitiligo. Vitiligo vulgaris was the commonest type, 85 (42.2%) among the non segmental vitiligo. Koebner phenomena was found in 120 (47.3%). 117 (48.8%) believed rat bite and 54 (21.9%) thought vitamine deficiency was the cause for vitiligo. 210 (82.3%) had their personal life affected by the disease and 160 (62.7%) had their social lfe affected. Marital life and occupational lives were affected in 22 (7.8%). Associated autuimmune or endocrine disorders were found in 18 (7%). CONCLUSION: Vitiligo is the commonest pigmentary disorder in Sri Lanka with a grate personal and social impact. The clinical and epidemiological profile is similer to studies done in other countries.
